We arrived at THill around 8pm on Friday night and our good friends Coleen and Vik Anderson had saved us a spot for our toy hauler
We got settled in as the wind howled across THill and kept Beth awake most of the night Saturday was bright and sunny but the wind was still blowing. I was not practicing so I had a nice casual day. Registration and Tech went well except for not knowing I needed my transponder on the bike so Tech could check it for the Tag Team Race. That was a nice walk to start the day. Thanks to Dave Moss for letting me park my bike and come back for it.

I found these two jokers with a new sponsor
Has to be one of the best sponsors ever :teeth
F40 lightweightgrid grid 11th finish 12th
I was feeling pretty good on Saturday afternoon as I did not practice the whole day. I was nice and relaxed and got on the track for the first race warm up lap to see what the Penske rear Dan had loaned me would feel like on the proddy bike. Dave Moss gave it an inital setup and it felt pretty good on the warm up laps.
We were the third wave away so we would run into lap traffic somewhere during the race. I had Rob Cambell gridded in front of me just to the right so I knew there would be a "hole" to go into as he would be away fast. Tommy Dorsey was in front of Rob and Rob was past him before we got to the start finish tower.
Bill Wickersham was on left and he came by me as we all tried to funnel into turn 1. 1 other bike made it past me on the insdie of 1 and we settled down for the first lap.
Tommy was in front of me and Bill was in front of Tommy as we curved around Turn 2, watching the sparks come of Tommy rearsets made me think about how far over we were cranked! Big thanks to Chris at Pirelli for great tires.I am usually not any where near Tommy so I had not rode behind him before.
I tired to drive up the inside on the exit from 2 towwards turn 3 but he was on the gas and I was not close enough. Deb Barton came around me on the Exit of 3 and slotted in behind Tommy as we went back to the left side of the tire for Turn 4. Up the hill into 5 and I came real close to the rear wheel of the bike that had just passed me. I lost my drive a little down the hill towards 6 and they opened up a 4 or 5 bike length gap. Swearing to myself in my helmet :teeth I cracked the throttle a little more than I usually do driving towards 6. I got a decent drive out of 6 but was getting gapped towards 7 and into 8. Damm it go faster!!!!!
Around 8 WFO in 5th all the way out to the stripe then bring the bike back before I run out of pavement and end up in the dirt. Close the gap down a little bit on the brakes into 9, down into 10 Deb Barton had a really different line into 10 and shot under Tommy, it was very pretty watch the pass and it looks great on the video. Tommy stood up a little and I tried to drive by him towards 11 but again I did not quite have the speed.
11, 12, 13 to far back to catch a draft, 4th 5th and into 6th WFO about 120 on the GPS. I had been leaving my braking later adn later after the bridge as there was a really strong headwind. I satup hit the brakes adn changed down into 3rd before rolling to the right for 14. Tommy had a better line thru 14/15 than I did and he was moving further away ahhhhhhh! Dammit go faster. I almost ran out of track driving on to the straight I was all the way up on the white curbing which made my sphincter contract sharply before I poinited in the right direction and got on the gas harder. I was surprised to see Tommy letting off for turn 1 way before I was and I managed to close to within a couple of bike lengths as we headed for turn 1. The end of lap 1 phew!!!!! concentrate and keep racing
I tucked in behind Tommy trying to keep close enough to pick up his lines and see where I could get past him. 2, 3, 4, he pulled another few bike lengths and I closed on him braking into Turn 5. He pulls away a little as we are WFO thru 8 and up into 9. A group of riders are ahead of us as we head into turn 10. 5 bikes just ahead of Tommy as we complete the lap.
We have a freight train heading around 2 - 5 and it looks great except for the fact I am at the back of the train!!!!! I am right on Tommys tail all the way until 8 where he pulls a few lenghts that I get back again as we exit 11. Right behind him again as we hammer under the bridge. I really need to learn his line around 14 and 15 as he pulls 5 or 6 lenghts there.
Back on him again at the end of the straight and into turn 1. I got really close to him in turn 5 checked up and then got passed on the inside into 6 by one of the heavyweight bikes who started 2 waves in front of us. Damm I hate getting passed, good job I am used to it by now *grin*. Anyway, I look up the inside of Tommy climbing the hill to 9 but dont have enough speed to make a safe pass. I get close on the brakes into 10 but still not safe enough for a pass. The bikes clump together on the entry to 11, 12, 13 and spread out again as we all drive down under the bridge. I start to fall back as we drive down the straight towards start finish and get the white flag.
I pass my braking marker and let the bike flow around Turn 1 then quick on the gas to drive towards 2. The gap is down to about 5 bike lengths. In 2 Tommy go's flying by a rider in the middle ot the turn on the outside. I catch the rider about the middle of 2 and we are almost touching paint as we drift out to the right driving towards 3. Keep the same distance thrugh 4 then close under the brakes into 5. Then Tommy open up the gap again down off 5 into 6, I really need to figure out this corner better.
Into 6 I close under the brakes again, John was right in front of Tommy. He took a look up the inside into 7 but thought better of it. Johns bike has a LOT of get up and go. I hold back just a little so I can be WFO in 5th going around 8. I missjudge it and cant close enough on Tommy to make a inside pass into 9. Tommy comes across and takes a defensive line into 9 right behind john . Bill is right in front of John as we crest the hill. As we head down to 10 John takes the inside line so Tommy cant get past and I follow Tommy in about 2 bike lengths behind again.
On the throttle as we head towards 11 but still not close enough. I decide to square of the corner and see if I can get a better drive out of 13.Tommy "wobbles" a little at the entry to 11 and I get on the left side of him as we drive out of 13. I am right behind him as we go under the bridge and he brakes much later than I do so he gaps me into 14. In the middle of 14/15 is a big assed Ducati from the wave in front of us. John and Tommy catch him on the inside and drive past him I take the outside line and he drifts twards me at the exit of 15. I am sure he cant see me!!!!! I am up on the white curbing as I draw level with him and he looks over in surprise to see me there *LOL* He opens the throttle and leaves me for dead.Head down and drive all the way past start finish to the timing line(not like Siggy)*LOL*
Best lap was a 2:05:741 good race and thanks to Tommy for showing me the way.
Tag Team with Brad finished 4th in Lightweight
Brad Gyger agreed to be part of our tag team which was 2 riders over a 1 hour event. Cant pit before 20 or after 40 minutes. We were treating this as a 1/2 hour of practice and decided that it was better to finish than to bin it.
Brad took the first leg including the Le Man start, he slipped as he started to run then could not find the shift lever when he got on the bike. A little "Keystone Cops"ish but fun.
He took of and started laying down some decent laps. I would run to the wall at each lap and give him signals for how much gap he had over the bike behind him. Also looking for the signal for when he was ready to come in.
Right around 30 minutes he gave me the "finger" his last lap.
Who says "endurance" races are not popular
I ran back to the pit got my gear on and waited for him to come into pit lane. Our great pit crew, Beth and Vincent had their jobs all worked out and we were back on track really quickly. Vincent got the rear stand and Beth removed the armband that Brad was wearing and put it on my right arm.
I headed of down pit lane to start my session my mind was not really in the right place in the first couple of laps. No one was in sight in front of me so I stared relaxing and clicking of 2:08 and 2:07 laps.
The pit crew waits and looks on.
This is probably the only picture you will ever see of my wife wearing tennis shoes, sorry honey could not resist :rofl
I came up behind one of the other bikes. Just as we were exiting from Turn 15 I TOTALLY misjudged the speed differential and almost asspacked the poor rider as we got on the straight. I swerved to the left and tried to get my heart rate back to something close to normality.
I got my head back in the game, I started to relax and as the fuel load got lighter I started to get faster. 2:08. then 2:07 then 2:06. I realed off a total of 16 laps.
The party began with a couple of coronas and went on WAY to late into the night. I think we finished 4th overall but currently on my.afmracing.com we show as 2nd!!!!! in the Lightweight
650 prod 5th on grid finished 5th
10 bikes on the grid and we are the first wave of the first race of the morning. I REALLY was not feeling well as the "lemon infused vodka" + the beer from a great Saturday night were still distilling themselves thru the pores of my skin. Note to self dont do that again!!!!
I was gridded on the left side of the 2nd row, not my favourite position as you get "pinched" into Turn 1. I got ready for the start, shield down at the 2 board, revs up on the 1 board. Ignore it going sideways watch the startees hand which is holding the flag. I got a great launch and made it up level with Dan Sewell who had a pretty poor start by his high standards. David got the holeshot into 1 followed by Robin then Dan came sweeping from my right and tucked in behind Robin.
I was in 4th, alright, wide elbows and defensive lines from here in *LOL* I wish I thought like that but no I just started to ride.
Dan went past Robin on the entry to 2 and started to close down David. As they disapeared into the distance Robin was about 10 -12 bike lengths ahead of me. I was almost being sick inside my helmet but no excuses, get my head out of my ass and ride.
I closed the gap under brakes into 10 and 11 then Robin gained more down the back straight. I closed into 14/15 but Robin had a much faster line than me and he shot of into the distance by the end of the straight.
Tommy came by me under the brakes into 1 and went after Robin I follwed as close as I could and ended up with my best laptime of the weekend 2:03:786. Tommy got past Robin with a nice clean inside pass into turn 3. He then got a good gap going. Tommy and Robin both dropped the hammer and started doing 2:01's so no way was I catching them.
The next lap we started to hit some traffic from the waves behind us and I had to pass on the left around 7 which is not a great place to pass. I had totally lost sight of Tommy and Robin so just decide to keep going.
At the end of the straight I passed another bike on the inside of 1, there was plenty of room and I was well past by the time we got to 2.
On the exit of 2 my bike suddently "fell" to the left and almost into the dirt, I said "Oh Shit" corrected and then it did it again!!! WTF. Not sure if it was the wind or a suspension issue or bad input on my part. I dont hink it was the tires as they looked great and worked brilliantly all weekend.
I got back in the groove adn the bike was fine in 3, 4 and 5 and the rest of the lap.Nothing but open track in front of me so I started to slack off and my times went up to a 2:05:131
Took the white flag and got that feeling that someone was behind me so I concentrated a bit more and put in a 2:05:079. Not much faster but enough to keep me in 5th position. No one in sight as I came over Turn 9 so I thought I was in for a lonley ride to the finish. I caught sight of one rider in Turn 14 ahead of me but they were well out of range.
My best finish in 5th but the gap between me adn the guys in front is huge. I need to find a couple of seconds a lap so I can start to compete with them.
F4 21st on grid finished 19th
I was gridded behind Ben and Bill and hoped to get a good start. I went past Ben towards I but Bill was in front. John Forman was 1 bike in front of me and I went for a inside block pass into turn 4 but was a bit to far back and got my nose cut for good measure *grin*. Good job Rory. I stood the bike up a little and drove up towards 5. Leason learned you need to be further up before you try that. i am going to ask Berto for lesssons *LOL*
Rory and John were side by side on the exit of 5 as we went down the hill but John had the inside line into 6. He had a better drive out of 6 and put a couple of bike lengths between him and Rory. I was a few bike lenghts behind him. I got close under brakes into 9 but not enough for a cigar. I was better under brakes into 10 and made the inside pass stick, I got the cigar *grin* Cheers Rory *grin
I got right on Johns tail into 11 and started looking for a place to pass. John gapped me to 14/15 he took a inside line into 14 and almost hit the back end of Mickey Fimbers as Mickey setup wide adn cut right across in front of John. I would say maybe 2 inches as John sat up a little and altered his line. That was CLOSE.
John was out driving me on the straight and no way I could catch him. I would close into Turn 2 and again into 5. i got a little close for comfort I time and had to chek up to avoid hitting his rear tire. My mis judgement. Right abotu that time the famous ThunderHill heat got to the glue on my camera mount and softeened it enough to drop the camera back into the fairing not a great view of the inside of the fairing bumping around!!!!.
I went back and forward for the rest of the race, he woudl out drive me I woudl close in 2 - 5 then he would out drive me again. Great race and I really enjoyed dicing with him. Rory you are getting better and better and I am going to keep passing you when ever I can *LOL*
650 twins finished 19th
I get a decent start and end up behind Mickey and Bill as we go towards Turn 2 a couple of bikes go past in 2 and I pass one of them back in 3. He comes back past me in 4 and up to 5. The problem with having a good start if fast guys then start to pass you again!!!!. I felt like I was going backwards.
Again the heat got to the camera and the rest of the race is a blur. I was behind Bill most of the way but could not figure out a way around him. It is fun having someone you can dice with and learn from. When Sapsis comes back watch out *grin*.
We started comming across lap traffic which is where I learned that I need more practice in picking my passing points. I lost aa ton of time getting stuck behind back markers and not passing them in a timmly fashion.
Finsihed 19th with a 2:04:027
