When I pulled in to the staging area the impossible hillclimb taunted me.
We would attempt it when we returned from our ride. We being zipbyu (YZ250), 1trackmind (WR450F), and Yard Sale (YZ250). Yours truly was rolling on a trials tire for the first time ever, a Michelin X11 with 10 psi.
zipbyu led the way and the trials tire proved its worth on the first rocky climb.
We rode a rocky trail that was extremely challenging. The climbs weren't particularly steep but the rocks were softball to bowling ball sized and sharp. It was intense.
We headed over to Hungry Valley.
I pointed out a hill with some serious boulders at the top. zipbyu and 1trackmind asked if I ever climbed it. Hell no, I only came down it this way after coming up from the other side. That inspired zipbyu to climb it.
I tried it myself, bailing on the left line and finally succeeding on the right line but it was ugly.
We headed back the rocky trail and for some reason it was more difficult coming back. I think we got off on a spur trail for a portion.
We took a breather because the rocks really sapped the energy from the old guys.
From this spot we could see the radio tower on Warm Springs Mtn.
We could also see this snowy, icy, muddy, wet, slippery climb and I wanted to test my tire on it.
It worked great.
Back at the staging area, 1trackmind rode his bike into his trail. I yelled, "Oh no you don't!" as I pointed to the impossible taunting hill and rode toward it.
It was much easier than before at the bottom, allowing me to carry more speed at the top. But there was a kicker that killed my momentum and forced me to click down into first gear. Nonetheless, I made to the top.
Basking in the glory of my victory, I figured everybody else would have to buy a trials tire or sit at the bottom of the hill in shame. Just then I heard the warble of a four stroke. No, it can't be ...
1trackmind hasn't even attempted this climb before, hell, he hasn't even laid eyes on it before, and here he is making it on his first try!
Then zipbyu roosted on up.
I lost my fanny pack up top so I ended up having to re-climb the hill and it was even easier the second time.
After a couple hours of riding, the Michelin X11 trials tire gets a thumbs up from me.
