SO the guy that I bought my bike from said he had put a new battery in it a couple months before I bought it, but only rode it around the block with the new battery.. now it has a hard time keeping a charge.. Yesterday It didnt have enough to start the bike, and I had to jump it. Today it didnt have enough juice to even really light up the gauges when I turned the key on.. then I had to jump it.. I rode it for a little while got home, and battery still wasnt charged.. Do I need a new battery or do you think the problem lies somewhere else?

How long does it sit between rides? I keep my bikes on a battery tender when in not riding them. Battery lasts a lot longer if you use the battery tenders. 5 years on a battery.

If you put a voltmeter across the terminals while the bike is running, what voltage does it show?

Interesting that there's two on threads in Garage talking about regulator / rectifiers.
Anyway... if the voltmeter shows the battery voltage (12v) while the bike is running, then the problem won't necessarily be the battery. While the bike is running, the voltmeter should show around 14v; 13 is fine, 13.5 is more likely. If it's only showing 12, then your running bike isn't charging your battery, and therefore there's something wrong with something in your charging system, such as the rectifier.
Doh, I just noticed you said you didn't have a voltmeter. Sorry.

How did you jump start your bike? Jumper cables to a car battery. Then i stalled it on a hill today and had to roll it down the hill and put it in gear to get it going again. I miiiight need somebody to take a look at it.. I dont know what i'm doing yet as i'm still new to this, and yea.. no voltmeter.

Jumper cables from a car that is NOT RUNNING is ok to jump start a ride. Otherwise frying the rectifier is not a good thing.

yes, a running car will melt your charging system.
Car stays off.

i posted the same thing gus mine is in the shop as i type this its either the stator/alternator or the rectifier i dont have a meter either but if its not charging dont keep riding it have it fixed before you fry the batt if it hasnt yet! i was told by steve that rectifiers are about 120$ and 180? for the stator but he wasnt for sure on the price he said he could have them nxt day for me if yours isnt warranty then i would go for a Ricky Stator they have a repor and a following let us know which it was

Ya I just wanna take it down to steve and let them just take care of it. My bike isn't under warranty. Hopefully I can get my bike down there in a couple days so I can get the bike back since I can finally ride around town!
